When it comes to authentic restaurants in Nashua, Giant of Siam has you covered. As the first Thai restaurant in Southern New Hampshire, our family-owned established takes great pride in holding true to our family recipes. However, the word recipes doesn’t just refer to food, it means drink also! And, this month we’re celebrating National Bubble Tea Day!
Boba tea, also called bubble tea, is an authentic creamy, iced Taiwanese drink said to have been created in the 1980s. The drink combines tea, milk, spices, and (of course) the exciting addition of bubbles! No, not bubbles that you blow through a straw – pearls or boba that are made from tapioca.
Boba is made from partially cooked tapioca flour, the starch extracted from the cassava root. Gluten-free and flavorless, boba is truly just a fun addition to any iced or hot beverage. Because of the tapioca base, boba is also called Tapioca Pearls. The key when making boba lies within the timing. If they sit too long, the pearls begin to dry out and become stiff – the exact opposite of what bubble tea is about!
While plain black tea is the easy substitute for this creamy beverage, authentic flavor calls for authentic tea. Thai teas are crafted from a strong black tea base but are often infused with spices. With various additions like clove, cardamom, tamarind, and star anise you’re provided a distinct and delectable flavor true to Thai culture.
